Asbestos is a natural-occurring mineral once used in various building materials, including flat and cement sheeting, pipe insulation, floor tiles, and roofing. Exposure to the mineral raises the risk of developing respiratory diseases and lung, ovarian, and larynx cancer, all of which usually develop decades after the exposure.
The presence of asbestos in your commercial building is not hazardous. Generally, material in good condition will release asbestos fibers once disturbed. If the asbestos material in your building is in good condition, it is better to leave it.
Asbestos material that is damaged is hazardous. The material that crumbles when handled or that has been scraped, sawed, or sanded into a powder will likely release asbestos fibers and create a health hazard.
However, if you want to demolish a building, then asbestos abatement is essential to protect the people and the environment from the hazard.
With that said, the Kelley Square Flea Market building at 149 Washington Street was scheduled to be demolished. They contacted Karma Environmental Services to assess and remove asbestos from the building. We are fully licensed and insured asbestos contractors in Massachusetts.
Here is the process we followed
Asbestos Testing and Mitigation
The licensed expert visited the site to inspect the suspect material and determine the level of hazard associated. He then informed the owner by providing a written evaluation detailing where the mineral was found, the extent of its presence, and recommendations for removal.
Asbestos Removal Process
The expert planned containment and decontamination areas, the path for removing waste bags containing asbestos, and how long the process will take.
The steps followed for asbestos removal:
Our technicians wore a full-face mask respirator and coveralls when removing asbestos-containing materials.
HVAC units were turned off, and vents were sealed to prevent asbestos fibers from circulating.
They sealed the work area with plastic sheeting.
Our experts use wet cleanup tools and HEPA filter vacuums to clean the space.
They placed all the removed asbestos materials in clearly marked, leak-tight waste containers/bags.
When the technicians finished the work, they followed a decontamination protocol.
After the removal, our professionals took the material to a landfill qualified to receive the waste.
We planned out all the processes per the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) regulations and notified the government.
Karma Environmental Services has not and will never violate the asbestos regulations set by MassDEP. We understand that asbestos material is hazardous and can put our workers and the public at risk.
It is fake news that we violated the regulations and incurred a penalty.
